1.0 Introduction

For more than a century, the discipline of quality has continuously reinvented itself. We moved from inspecting finished products to controlling processes through statistics. We then embraced Total Quality Management, followed by Lean and Six Sigma, to eliminate waste and reduce variation. More recently, Quality 4.0 introduced digital technologies that connected machines, systems, and data in ways previously unimaginable.
Today, however, organizations face a different challenge. Artificial intelligence can predict failures before they occur. Sensors can monitor processes around the clock. Machine learning algorithms can identify patterns that would take humans weeks to discover. Yet despite these remarkable advances, organizations continue to struggle with recurring deviations, poor decision-making, disengaged employees, and declining customer trust.
This paradox raises an important question: If technology is becoming smarter, why aren’t organizations improving at the same pace?
The answer, in my view, is that quality has reached a point where technological advancement alone is no longer enough. The next evolution of quality is not about making machines more intelligent; it is about enabling people to make better decisions through intelligent technologies. This is where Quality 5.0 begins.
2.0 Defining Quality 5.0
2.1 What is Industry 5.0 [1]?
Industry 5.0 is defined by a re-found and widened purposefulness, going beyond producing goods and services for profit. This wider purpose constitutes three core elements: human-centricity, sustainability and resilience.
Industry 5.0 recognises the power of industry to achieve societal goals beyond jobs and growth to become a resilient provider of prosperity, by making production respect the boundaries of our planet and placing the wellbeing of the industry worker at the centre of the production process.

2.2 The Evolution of Quality
The journey toward Quality 5.0 reflects the changing priorities of industry. Each evolution solved previous limitations but created new gaps.

Quality 1.0 emphasized product inspection and defect detection after production.

Quality 2.0 introduced statistical quality control, enabling organizations to prevent defects through process monitoring and data-driven decision making.

Quality 3.0 expanded the focus to organizational excellence through Total Quality Management, customer satisfaction, continuous improvement, and employee involvement.

Quality 4.0 embraced digital transformation by integrating technologies such as Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), cloud computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twins, robotics, and advanced analytics into quality systems.

Quality 5.0 goes one step further by ensuring that technology serves people rather than replacing them. It balances operational excellence with employee well-being, sustainability, resilience, ethical AI, and customer trust.
